The total was more than five times the original estimate.
The brown, leather-bound, 3ft-long trunk – complete with Louis Vuitton insignia – was one of nearly 1,500 lots on offer at Keys Fine Art Auctioneers’ latest two-day antique sale.
The Louis Vuitton trunk is from the early 20th century, when ocean travel increased and demand for this kind of luggage was high.
The Paris-based company made and supplied trunks and suitcases to the landed gentry and nobility of Europe.
It was given an auction room estimate to sell for between £500-£700, but fierce bidding culminated in its purchase by an Essex buyer for £3,600.
Keys partner Roy Murphy said: “Even today, Louis Vuitton is one of the most famous brands of designer luggage.
“But a hundred years ago it was already a desirable label, and travelling with Louis Vuitton luggage was a sign of wealth and taste.”
He added: “This is a lovely example, in good condition, beautifully lined, and with the Louis Vuitton badge in excellent order.
“We expected a good level of interest, but the high price achieved took everyone by surprise, and just goes to show that designer luggage is as popular today as it has always been.”
Other highlights in the auction included:
■ An ivory chess set in the form of hierarchical figures, which sold for £5,600 (estimate £800-900)
■ A 1796 pattern Light Cavalry trooper’s sword, which sold for £1,600 (estimate £300-350).
The sale took place at Keys on April 9 and 10.
